Existing home sales totaled 17,228 statewide, up from 16,790 sold in May 2010, according to the latest housing data released by the trade asso­ciation Florida Realtors. Statewide sales of existing condos rose 17 percent in May compared to the year-ago sales figure.

May is the sixth consecutive month that the group has reported higher year­over- year existing home and condo sales statewide, Florida Realtors said.

Figures from the Tallahassee Board of Realtors showed a total of 250 sales of single-family homes, townhouses and condos sold in the Tallahassee metro area in May, down from 347 in May 2010. The totals include the entire metro area of Leon, Gadsden, Jef­ferson and Wakulla counties.

Nationally, home sales sank 3.8 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.81 million homes, the National Association of Realtors said Tuesday. That’s far below the roughly 6 million annual sales rate typical in healthy hous­ing markets.
